Liberal arts special collections portal

A shared gateway for American missionary history in China.

This Omeka S demo presents public metadata, citations, and interpretive pathways for special collections held by Colby and peer institutions. It is designed as a first Colby node that can later point to college-maintained exhibits, student projects, mission-board histories, schools and hospitals, and controlled resource links while keeping scans and unpublished PDFs private until rights are resolved.

People

Missionaries, Chinese students, educators, physicians, Colby alumni, and named figures who connect collections across institutions.

Mission Boards

Bilingual categories for Baptist, Congregational, Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, YMCA, and YWCA networks.

Schools & Hospitals

Mission colleges, middle schools, hospitals, and student-life institutions as separate research pathways.

Digitized Resources

Yearbooks, reports, PDFs, and scan sets represented by public metadata first, with files kept private until rights are resolved.

Student Projects

Colby College student-name projects, special reports, and future class-built exhibit links.

Partner Resources

Direct links to external exhibits and digital collections such as Ginling, MIT, BU posters, and YMCA athletics resources.

Portal principle

Each school or archive can maintain its own exhibit and scholarly voice. This site supplies the shared resource layer: people, boards, institutions, citations, rights notes, student project links, and cross-institution discovery.
